Household concerns about personal finances have hit a three-year high as the Iran war threatens a fresh spike in inflation. Consumers' confidence over their financial wellbeing fell its lowest level since July 2023, according to a survey of 1,500 UK households. The S&P Global UK Consumer Sentiment Index showed households were more pessimistic about the year ahead as the conflict in the Middle East creates “growing unease”. Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global, said people were expecting higher interest rates from the Bank of England to combat an expected surge in inflation. The war has driven up the price of petrol by 25p a litre, with diesel almost 50p per litre above pre-war levels. Money markets indicate the Bank of England will raise interest rates at least once this year as a result of the conflict. Traders had expected rate cuts before the war broke out.
