fifth day, but West Texas Intermediate oil prices are up about 14 per cent in the past week to US$74.19 as of Wednesday morning from US$65.21 on Feb. 26. At issue is the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that serves as the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. About 25 per cent of the world's oil production, or 20 million barrels of oil per day, must pass through the strait to reach its end markets. Geographically, the strait separates Iran to the north from the United Arab Emirates and Oman to the south, but oil-rich countries including Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar all move petroleum and other fossil fuels through its waters. There have been reports that Iran's military has threatened to destroy any vessel attempting passage, but United States President Donald Trump has said the U.S. Navy will escort tankers and provide insurance if necessary to ensure safe passage.
