On April 20, S&P Global Mobility released its data on the number of imported finished vehicles for 2025. Stephanie Brinley, a principal automotive analyst at the auto data and forecasting firm, declined to provide the import data for 2024 for comparison to see which automakers tweaked their domestic production due to tariffs. But she said tariffs did cause some companies to import fewer vehicles. That does not necessarily mean automakers significantly added production in the United States last year, however, because shifting production to new plants can't be done "in a few months," Brinley said. "Ford's U.S. production has been among the highest relative to its imports well before tariffs," Brinley told the Detroit Free Press. "It is a priority for the company and reflects its higher dependence on this market versus some other global automakers."
