“New-vehicle prices have been increasing steadily – albeit slowly – for more than a year now,” Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book said in a recent report. “After peaking in September, prices have remained mostly stable at just under $50,000." The reason? There are many. Computer chips: Going back to the pandemic, there was a shortage of consumer chips. That curtailed output of vehicles. It was the age-old story of supply and demand. The chip crisis “affected what was available,” Stephanie Brinley, analyst with S&P Global Mobility, said in an interview. “Automakers concentrated on more high margin” vehicles to get the most of the chips that could get. Since then, the shortage has eased. But once prices go up, they often don't go back down. Electric vehicles : Production and sales of electric vehicles have increased.
