Broadcast station owners like Nexstar and Sinclair want in on the action. Sinclair has made a hostile offer to acquire E.W. Scripps after issues of control have thus far doomed a friendly deal, sources told CNBC. Nexstar and Tegna have proposed a deal that requires changes to decades-old FCC rules that would prevent their merger. Peer companies are slow to attempt deals until those changes happen, too. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has been vocal about his support to remove the rules, but in recent weeks President Donald Trump slammed proposed consolidation in a Truth Social post.
