Electric vehicles gained market share in the European Union at the start of the year, even as overall car sales remained subdued, industry data showed. The share of fully electric cars rose to 18.8% from 15.2% since the beginning of the year, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) said. New passenger car registrations in February increased by 1.4% year-on-year to 865,437 vehicles. However, registrations for the first two months of the year fell by 1.2% to 1.665 million cars. Sales rose in Germany, Italy and Spain in February, while France recorded a decline. Volkswagen remained the EU's largest carmaker, with group sales up 2.6%, although its Porsche brand saw a drop of more than 5%. Stellantis posted a stronger increase of nearly 10%, outperforming Volkswagen. Registrations for BMW and Mercedes-Benz declined.
