On Thursday, the international union announced that it had struck a tentative agreement with Volkswagen after 18 months of negotiations over the future of the workforce at the plant, which builds the Volkswagen Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and the electric ID.4. The employees of the Chattanooga plant voted to unionize in early 2024 as the UAW sought to increase membership at automotive assembly plants across the South. The workforce will decide this week whether to ratify the contract, with voting planned for Feb. 18 and 19. Previously, the union had been rebuffed in the South at several plants, including Chattanooga twice before. But now, experts tell the Detroit Free Press, with the organizing and negotiating done, the UAW and its members stand to gain in the South, while its popular and sometimes controversial president, Shawn Fain, seeks to earn another term leading the international union.
