Stocks struggle to find footing, closing down for the week Last Updated Feb 9, 2018 4:57 PM EST U.S. stocks swung wildly on Friday, closing sharply higher but still ending the week with loss of over 5 percent. The up-and-down swings followed a drop of 10 percent from the latest record highs set only weeks ago. At midday, the market was on pace for its worst weekly drop since October 2008, at the height of the financial crisis. By late afternoon, stocks had pared some of their losses but remained on course to add to the weeklong sell-off. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which suffered a 1000-point drop Thursday, closed higher by 330 points, or 1.4 percent, at 24,190. The S&P 500 was up 38 points, or 1.5 percent, to close at 2,619, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite closed 1.4 percent higher, at 6,874.
