Veteran oil and gas analyst Randy Ollenberger lowered his rating to “market perform” from "outperform," while cutting his price target to $129 from $132. Toronto-listed shares have risen 40 per cent in 2025, handily outpacing Suncor Energy ( SU.TO SU ) and Cenovus Energy ( CVE.TO CVE ), which have gained about 18 and 13 per cent, respectively. Imperial Oil Limited (IMO.TO) “At current prices, the shares reflect a large valuation premium,” Ollenberger wrote in a note to clients on Monday. “We see limited upside versus peers without higher oil prices to support an SIB.” An SIB is a special share buyback. Ollenberger says this is unlikely from Imperial in 2026, given softer commodity prices. Imperial's NCIB (normal course issuer bid), or share buyback program, is typically renewed each June. “With 68 per cent of the float owned by Exxon Mobil, Imperial's share buyback programs have an outsized impact on its share price,” Ollenberger wrote.
