Investment Thesis Suncor Energy Inc. ( SU ) is facing some significant challenges in the era of “lower for longer” oil prices. The factors creating a challenging operating environment for Canada’s largest oil producer include: a prolonged pricing differential between Western Canadian Select (WCS) compared to West Texas Intermediate (WTI), concerns over a global supply glut, government mandated supply cuts and a crippling transportation bottleneck. With all these headwinds, is Suncor still a good investment? Despite these challenges, Suncor posted record results in Q3 2018 with a 27% increase in funds from operations over the same period last year on flat production. During this quarter, Suncor paid out $582M in dividends, bought back $889M shares of its stock and paid down $1.2B in debt .
