The company is trying to become the first company to commercialize nuclear fusion — the same type of energy generation that powers the sun — and said going public will enable it to raise the capital needed to achieve its ambitions. Nuclear fusion involves heating atoms to extreme temperatures until they fuse. It promises abundant clean energy without the radioactive waste and dangers associated with nuclear fission, or the splitting of atoms. Although more than 50 companies are focused on nuclear fusion, it has never been achieved at a commercial scale. “There is a global race happening in fusion and we consider ourselves to be Canada's horse in that race ,” Greg Twinney, chief executive of General Fusion, said.
