A fort on the River Medway in Kent will be offered at an auction next week with estate agency Savills, with a guide price of £50,000. Darnet Fort was constructed between 1870 and 1872 following a recommendation by the 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom. It was designed as part of an inner defensive line protecting the vital Royal Naval Dockyard at Chatham One kilometre upstream is Hoo Island, the second sea fort on a low-lying island within the Medway channel. It is believed that the pair were designed to create a bottleneck defence for the river, forming part of Britain's coastal defence system. Darnet Fort has two levels, to accommodate two tiers of guns mounted in a circle. While the lower level still has a series of gun points, it is now partially submerged.
