When Rob Delahey joined Sysco Canada Inc. in Peterborough, Ont., back in 2007, there was already a program in place to have the global food distribution company share its unsold products with local hunger relief agencies. That program and many other sustainability measures have only expanded since that time, and last year Delahey and his colleague David Devlin were able to use their professional skills to make it more efficient than ever. Delahey is finance manager operations for the Ontario region and Winnipeg-based Devlin is director, finance business partner supply chain for the company, which sells all types of food products to the food-away-from- home market, including restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, educational institutions, supermarket delis and other major customers. Both employees were involved in the record-keeping for Sysco's food waste diversion, in which, for example, a case of canned corn has one damaged can but the other five can be sent to a food bank.
