Before that exhilarating, non-stop basketball buffet, millions of fans across the country get something of an appetizer to prepare them for the madness that awaits. Since the field expanded to 68 teams during the 2011 season, there has been the First Four, when the four lowest-ranked No. 16 seeds and the final four at-large teams meet for play-in games to see who makes it into the main portion of the tournament's bracket. It's more than just a trivial diversion for basketball-starved fans. In the 's first year, one of its participants, VCU, went all the way to the Final Four. A First Four team has won a first-round game in most NCAA tournaments since the 68-team format debuted.
