operating beyond its planned retirement date, delaying the facility's transition to natural gas. The Calgary-based utility said coal generation at Centralia Unit 2 had been scheduled to end by December 31, after which the plant was to be converted to run on cleaner-burning natural gas. Under the federal order, TransAlta must keep the unit available for operation until March 16, citing regional reliability concerns. The Energy Department said its decision followed an assessment by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which warned that the Pacific Northwest faces an elevated risk of power shortages during prolonged cold weather events. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the administration would continue taking steps to prevent supply disruptions and price spikes by keeping critical generation sources online.
