The space agency said it is investigating why the landing gear could not be deployed. "Today, a mechanical issue with one of NASA's WB-57s resulted in a gear-up landing at Ellington Field," NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens posted on X shortly after the incident. Many of NASA's aircraft for the nearby Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center are based at Ellington Airport. The space agency has been using WB-57s for research missions since the 1970s because of its ability to fly for up to 6.5 hours at a time and reach high altitudes of over 63,000 feet, the NASA website said. The plane can fit two people onboard. "Response to the incident is ongoing, and all crew are safe at this time," Stevens said in her post. "As with any incident, a thorough investigation will be conducted by NASA into the cause."
