company following a $3.54 billion merger that's prompted federal lawsuits by several states and a leading TV provider. The Federal Communications Commission said on March 19 it approved the multi-billion-dollar sale of local television station owner Tegna to Nexstar Media Group. Not long after, Nexstar announced it had closed its acquisition of Tegna after receiving FCC and U.S. Department of Justice approval. Nexstar, which already owned Columbus affiliate station NBC 4, will now take over local CBS affiliate 10TV, 1460 ESPN Columbus and The Fan 97.1, all of which were previously owned by its smaller rival Tegna The FCC and Nexstar say the acquisition will better serve local audiences, but a handful of Democratic-led states and a major TV provider have moved to block the merger, citing concerns over the expanded influence it would give Nexstar.
