In 2014, after a successful 20 year stint at GlaxoSmithKline, Christophe Weber made an eyebrow raising career move by taking over the reins of the Japanese pharmaceutical company, Takeda. In doing so, Weber became the first non-Japanese to become the President and CEO of a major Japanese pharmaceutical company. Right from the outset, Weber vowed to cultivate a global identity and wanted Takeda to be viewed as a global leader. Initially, he took measured steps selling off assets including the Fujifilm Holding Company and Takeda’s respiratory medicines to AstraZeneca. He also made a significant acquisition to add to Takeda’s oncology franchise with the purchase of Ariad for $4.66 billion. But that all pales when compared to his boldest move by far – the acquisition of Shire for $62 billion.
