The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.4 percent or 26.2 points 6,295.3 at the close of trade. The benchmark dipped 0.4 percent on Wednesday. However, broader Asian shares fell to an eight-week low as investors steered clear of riskier assets ahead of fresh Chinese and U.S. trade talks, which start later on Thursday.
