The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded 45 vehicles its highest safety rating for 2026. IIHS is pushing automakers to improve back seat passenger protection and crash avoidance systems. SUVs dominated the awards, while no minivans, minicars, or small pickups received a top designation. Forty-five cars and SUVs qualified for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick+ designation, which is the highest award from the group that represents the insurance industry. But the group said carmakers should still do more to increase passenger safety. IIHS is "pushing automakers to improve their crash avoidance systems and demanding superior protection for back seat passengers," as it presented the 2026 safety awards to dozens of vehicles. "This year, we're asking automakers to make excellent protection for back seat passengers the norm," IIHS President David Harkey said.
