The yoke, a flat-topped, flat-bottomed steering wheel is starting to work its way into more prototypes and even production vehicles, but it's still not ready for prime time. The yoke—popular among engineers for facilitating electronic steer-by-wire systems that'll be coming to a car near you soon—demands less actual turning, but drivers find these take more getting used to, so they are slow to make their way to market. But the real advantage of a yoke is that it increases visibility. By virtue of the flat top and bottom, it reduces the amount of “wheel” in a driver's field of vision. This idea of increased visibility is next era of innovation, aided by new steering wheel shapes, displays set lower on the dashboard and ironically, more expansive screens.
