Toyota is planning to release a new electric SUV despite its previous cautious approach to the EV market. The automaker's first mainstream EV, the bZ4X, has seen declining sales and has lackluster specs compared to rivals. Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE: TM) has taken a measured and hesitant approach to production in the United States, but it's about to disrupt an emerging vehicle segment with a new SUV. It's no secret that Toyota has been cautious about electric vehicle production in the U.S. The brand lagged behind , Hyundai, Kia, Ford and more as many automakers populated the now-popular small electric SUV vehicle segment led by the Tesla Model Y. Today Toyota does offer a small electric SUV option, but it's nowhere near as dominant as the Toyota RAV4 in its segment. Surprisingly, Toyota is taking another crack at EV production in a big way, aiming for a segment that's been building buzz in recent years. Here's why this development is shocking to say the least.
