After surging 450% in 2025, the stock was up 17% in 2026 as of Jan. 8. This time last year, the metals stock was trading at around $1 per share. Its trajectory changed drastically in April 2025 when it announced what it described as "the world's first application for commercial recovery permit" under U.S. law, outlining a potential path to mine polymetallic nodules. That announcement was meaningful because, up until then, the key to its treasure trove had been tied to permission from the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which has yet to finalize a regulatory framework for deep-sea mining.
