For the first time in seven years, the average length of day became longer in 2023. Meanwhile, new predictions suggest that March 2025 will include the longest day since March 2019. As reported by , the latest figures provided by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service show that the Earth is decelerating, with a day in 2024 lasting a fraction longer than any day since 2019. The IERS is even predicting that the length of a day could reach up to +1.63 milliseconds over 24 hours by March 2025—which would be the longest day on record for five years. ‘Leap Seconds' And ‘Drop Seconds' A millisecond or two might not sound like much, but since today's technological society depends on digital time, those milliseconds soon mount up—requiring a “leap second” or, in theory, a “drop second” to bring everything back into sync.
