Citizen scientists in Dallas collected these data through the SwRI-led Citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) 2024 experiment. The total solar eclipse a few weeks ago saw some stupendous photography—not least from NASA astronauts on the International Space Station—but this image (above) is arguably the most important. It comes from the Citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) 2024 experiment, for which 35 teams of people across the path of totality from Texas through Maine captured images of the sun's outer atmosphere, its corona, during the darkness of totality when the moon blocked the sun's disk.
