TSMC is the world's largest contract semiconductor chip manufacturer and makes cutting-edge chips for Nvidia and Apple. Advertisement - Scroll to Continue Three people -- including a former TSMC engineer who went to work for Tokyo Electron's Taiwan entity and two staff employed by the chipmaker -- were charged in August under the National Security Act and the Trade Secrets Act. The ex-TSMC employee surnamed Chen allegedly used his relationships with former colleagues at the Taiwanese chipmaker to access trade secrets with the aim of helping Tokyo Electron "compete to become a supplier of equipment for more sites in TSMC's advanced processes", prosecutors said previously. On Tuesday, prosecutors said that Tokyo Electron's subsidiary in Taiwan had a "legal responsibility to supervise" Chen and had "failed to make every effort to prevent such misconduct".
