Shoppers are facing a 12.5pc price increase in the cost of lamb in supermarkets compared to the same time last year, according to retail analysts at Assosia. The average price across Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury's for a leg of lamb is £16.23 per kg, up from £14.43 per kg last year. The largest increase for a specific joint was at Sainsbury's, where a British butterflied leg rose by 33.3pc from £15 to £20. A half leg of Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Welsh Hill lamb has risen by 22.4pc from £14.50 to £17.75. The next biggest rise is at Tesco, where its Finest range lamb shoulder has gone up in price by 16.4pc from £14.50 to £17.75. Sam Bagge, the manager of the award-winning Walsingham Farm Shop in Norfolk, said: “It's definitely as expensive as I've ever seen it.” Mr Bagge said he was currently selling a 2.5kg leg of local, high-welfare lamb for £75, up from £65 last year.
