Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday unveiled new policies designed to revitalize lagging EV sales , such as reinstating cash rebates for consumers who purchase EVs, encouraging investment in EV production and investing in national EV charging infrastructure. Since President Donald Trump took office again last year, the U.S. has moved in almost the exact opposite direction. It terminated federal consumer tax credits for EVs, revoked the goal of achieving 50 per cent EV adoption by 2030, halted the expansion of national charging networks and drafted policies that will likely kill a credit-trading program that allowed pure-play EV makers such as Tesla Inc. to boost their revenues by selling emission credits to traditional automakers. Perhaps more telling, Carney committed to developing a new Canadian system of regulations for tailpipe emissions after essentially adopting U.S. standards for years.
