Tesla Inc., Ford Motor Co., and Starbucks Corp. all missed estimates. Only 56% of companies in the S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector beat GAAP earnings estimates in the fourth quarter, according to Bloomberg Intelligence data. That's below the 73% beat rate for the broader index, and the lowest level of outperformance since the first quarter of 2020. Consumers remain “choiceful” as inflation lingers, while tariffs hurt gross margins in the back half of 2025, said Steven Shemesh, a consumer discretionary equity analyst at RBC Capital Markets Corp. Companies had already pulled many of the easier cost-cutting levers, such as job cuts and lower transportation expenses, making further margin gains harder. At the same time, shoppers may have “hit a breaking point” on their bills after years of increases, forcing some retailers to lower prices to spur demand, Shemesh said.
