U.S. stocks on Tuesday closed sharply higher on the back of strong gains in prominent technology shares, which helped the Nasdaq exit bear-market territory as investors continued to bet on the prospects of the U.S. economy emerging from the grips of coronavirus. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 560 points, or 2.4%, at 23,950 and the S&P 500 index closed with a 3.1% gain at 2,846, based on preliminary data. Both benchmarks are near their highest levels since March 10, according to Dow Jones Market Data, when the viral outbreak began to seize up parts of the financial market and economy. The Nasdaq Composite Index , meanwhile, booked its fourth straight gain and exited bear-market territory, defined as a rise of at least 20% from a bear-market low. The tech-heavy index rose nearly 4% to finish at 8,515, supported by gains from online retailer and cloud-computing giant Amazon.com , which ended the session at a record high.
