When Donald Trump, an EV skeptic, was elected in November 2024 and took office in January 2025, things were going to change. Trump this week said he has rolled back what he called an “EV mandate,” overturning tougher fuel economy standards introduced by Biden. “Today my administration is taking historic action to lower costs for American consumers, protect American auto jobs and make buying a car much more affordable for countless American families — and also safer,” Trump said at a White House event. Automaker executives attended. GM CEO Mary Barra at the end of 2024 had been a big proponent of EVs. “We fundamentally believe EVs are better,” she said at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit Even then, Barra conceded EV expansion was facing headwinds.
