At midday: TSX climbs on energy sector boost Canada’s main stock index rose on Wednesday, lifted by energy shares tracking stronger oil prices, while hopes that the coronavirus outbreak could be peaking in the United States helped broader sentiment. The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations seemed to be leveling off in New York state, the U.S. epicenter of the pandemic, even as coronavirus deaths hit new highs. Further boosting sentiment, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Beijing and Washington could reach a trade deal as both sides resumed talks in a bid to end their tariff dispute. At 11:30 a.m. ET, the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 186.24 points, or 1.44%, at 13,809.77. Canada will keep up efforts to persuade the U.S. not to block the export of medical supplies to fight the coronavirus, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday, while the energy-producing province of Alberta warned of an economic disaster.
