"In total we will invest almost €1 billion [$1.17 billion] in the cell plant," Tesla told dpa. Currently, only components are made at the Grünheide plant, while the cells themselves are brought in from the United States. Production of the complete cells was planned since the opening of the site in 2022. A Tesla Model Y Standard uses 13.1 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometres. One gigawatt hour is equivalent to 1 million kilowatt hours. The company said manufacturing the cells in Europe was currently not economically feasible in the face of Chinese and US competition. "From the battery cells to the complete vehicle, everything should be produced at one production site," Tesla said in Grünheide. "This is unique in Europe and also increases the resilience of our supply chains," it added.
