into the semiconductor industry to help build chip plants and classifying them as nation-building projects under the Major Projects Office, says a consortium of technology industry groups. “The semiconductor industry is one of the most foundational and consequential industries of our time,” Namir Anani, president and chief technology officer of the non-profit Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), said. “Relying on foreign supplies could create a strategic vulnerability, (given that) global supply chains are fragile. We need to position ourselves strategically.” He said growing the semiconductor sector would help Canada boost its high-value jobs and exports and advance its artificial intelligence and quantum technologies strategies. Canada is currently the only G7 country to lack a national semiconductor strategy.
