Image by USDA Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is drafting legislation to restructure the U.S. meatpacking industry by capping how big the operations can be in handling different types of meats. The proposal, called the Farm and Family Relief Act , would prevent major meatpacking operations from handling more than one type of meat, which could require companies like Tyson Foods Inc., JBS USA Holding S.A., Cargill Meat Solutions, and Smithfield Foods to divest parts of their businesses. Supporters say the legislation is intended to address market concentration in the meat industry, improve competition, and help reduce food prices. However, industry groups warn the proposal could disrupt supply chains and increase costs for producers and consumers. The legislative outline proposes sweeping structural changes to the meatpacking sector.
