Since America is so deeply divided politically, the plot twist by Civil War writer-director Alex Garland is leaving moviegoers confused — especially in a presidential election year. New in theaters, Civil War is set in a dystopian society in the near future where the United States is split into four different regions, dubbed the Western Forces, the New People's Army, the Florida Alliance and the Loyalist States. The unnamed president (Nick Offerman), who is holed in the White House in Washington, D.C., is a third-term commander-in-chief who has the support of the Loyalist States.
