There is no doubt that American Airlines has its share of issues, from high rates of flight delays and cancellations to customer experience issues like reduced legroom, a lack of seat-back entertainment screens on many flights, and tiny lavatories on its single-aisle planes. The airline has also been over-exposed, compared to its Big Three rivals, to what has been an anemic domestic market in 2025. The airline also has large amounts of debt. For example, in 2021 the airline launched more than $7 billion in bonds using its frequent flyer program as collateral. Why? At the height of the COVID shutdown of world airlines, American's AAdvantage loyalty program was valued at between $18 billion and $30 billion, while the airline itself was worth less than $7 billion.
