Uber Technologies ( NYSE:UBER ) shares dropped intraday following reports that the company is expanding its New York City office footprint. The expansion coincides with CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's move to New York and reflects a return-to-office mandate, requiring employees to be on-site at least three days a week to foster higher levels of collaboration and speed in product development. The expansion comes as Uber's local workforce has grown to more than 2,000 employees, up from around 800 before the pandemic. The company is increasing its space at 3 World Trade Center to 11 floors, totaling nearly 500,000 square feet. The shift comes as Uber continues to refine its broader strategy, including a recent agreement to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian Automotive ( NASDAQ:RIVN ) and secure up to 50,000 autonomous-capable vehicles.
