You may be able to deduct up to $10,000 of car loan interest per year, but the deduction is gradually phased out if your modified adjusted gross income is greater than $100,000 ($200,000 for married couples filing a joint return). The car loan interest deduction is allowed only if the motor vehicle you purchase with a qualifying loan satisfies certain requirements, such as being a new vehicle, having a final assembly point in the U.S., and having a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds. If all the requirements are met, you can claim the deduction for car loan interest payments on Schedule 1-A whether you claim the Standard Deduction or itemized deductions on your federal income tax return.
