After Uber Technologies ( UBER Financials ) promised $1.25 billion to develop a fleet of robotaxis utilizing Rivian RIVN Financials ) cars, Rivian's stock price went up.Uber aims to buy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 cars as part of the deal. They may also add up to 40,000 more vehicles to the contract. The relationship should last until 2031, but only if Rivian meets important autonomous goals.The first robotaxis are set to start running in 2028. They will start in San Francisco and Miami and then grow to as many as 25 cities over time. You can only get the cars using Uber's app.Uber said that Rivian's vertically integrated strategy, which includes vehicle design, software, and computing systems, was a big reason for the transaction. The company also talked about Rivian's developing experience with both personal and business automobiles.Rivian's autonomous platform has a set of sensors that includes cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
