Uber is making one of its boldest moves yet in the push toward an autonomous future, at a time when the line between tech companies and automakers continues to blur. Its new partnership with Rivian is not just another vehicle supply agreement. It could become a major turning point in the development of a robotaxi network that may reshape urban mobility in the years ahead. At the center of the deal is the Rivian R2, an electric crossover expected to begin appearing on the streets of cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. What makes the project especially notable is the longer-term goal behind it. At least some of those vehicles are expected, sooner or later, to operate without a driver behind the wheel. Uber plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian by 2031, including an initial $300 million already set aside for the project.
