Dr Alex Kendall's Wayve now has support from Stellantis, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Uber, Nvidia and Microsoft, for his “bolt-on” autonomous-driving technology, which Wayve claims is “hardware agnostic”. “Autonomy will not scale through city-by-city robotaxi deployments alone," Dr Kendall said. “It will scale through a trusted platform that automakers and fleets can deploy globally and improve continuously.” That means Wayve claims to be able to be plugged in to any car with a sensor suite, regardless of the type, and enable self-driving, which would cut out billions of dollars of research and decades of time for auto makers. The capital raise values Wayve at $8.6 billion, all for a project that was part of Dr Kendall's PhD project. The Series D funding round saw additoinal investment from existing investors, Softbank Vision Fund 2, Balderton, Eclipse and new investment from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, Baillie Gifford, British Business Bank, Icehouse Ventu
