Here's what will be open and closed across Canada for Christmas Day on Dec. 25, Boxing Day on Dec. 26 and New Year's Day on Jan. 1. Shops and malls While most shops and malls are closed nationwide on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, closures on Boxing Day vary across the country. Boxing Day is not a statutory holiday in the Atlantic provinces, but it is still a designated retail closing day , which means you can expect most shops and malls to be closed on Dec. 26 in P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. Exceptions can include smaller grocery stores, pharmacies and shops that sell books, used clothing or plants. Elsewhere in Canada, most shops and malls are allowed to be open on Boxing Day, with many offering sales and door crasher deals.
