‘It's a shame': US mustard maker in talks to buy Colman's and Marmite [Yahoo! Finance]

The US maker of French's yellow mustard is in talks to buy Marmite and Colman's , making them the latest British brands that could fall into American hands. Unilever, which owns the spread and sauce, said it had received an offer for its food division from Baltimore-based spice and sauce maker McCormick. Marmite was founded in Burton-on-Trent in 1902, utilising leftover yeast from the Bass brewery. Colman's was founded in Norwich in 1814 and is still made from mustard seeds grown in the area. The food industry reacted with dismay to news of the potential sale, following other US takeovers of historic brands such as Cadbury and Lea & Perrins. John Farrand, the managing director of the Guild of Fine Food, called the potential sale “sad because that's removing revenue and business from the UK”.
