New research from the University of Michigan uses anonymized data from connected cars to help traffic engineers quickly understand traffic patterns. Drivers experience billions of dollars in congestion costs at intersections every year. Improving traffic signal timing could help reduce costs and delays. Sometimes you sit in your car at a traffic light, waiting for the light to turn green, and you wait, and you keep waiting. And you wait some more, even when the traffic passing in front of you doesn't appear to warrant such a delay. But in Oakland County, Michigan, a project underway with University of Michigan researchers has traffic experts hopeful that your excessive wait might one day be a relic of the past. The university is working with the Road Commission in the county to retime traffic lights.
