While local officials say they didn't receive advance notice from UniFirst about it being acquired by Cintas, they all expressed optimism that any impact it has on local operations will be a positive for the community. A big factor in that optimism is UniFirst held a groundbreaking just less than a year ago on a $28 million, 109,000 square-foot expansion of its Owensboro Distribution Center, which increased the facility's size to 469,000 square feet. At that time, the company said it had more than 520 local employees. “I'd like to think that the fact UniFirst has made the huge investment they did — when we had the ribbon cutting and groundbreaking — that investment they made into this facility, I'd like to think that's going to preserve (our position),” Daviess County Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen said. “With this acquisition, even if there are redundancies, duplicated offerings, that we would still see Owensboro rise to the top.
