U.S. stocks declined for the second time in three days following the release of March economic data that showed efforts to combat the coronavirus epidemic were taking a greater toll than feared. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 445 points, or 1.9% to close at about 23,507 and the S&P 500 index retreated 62 points, or 2.1% to end the session at roughly 2,783. The Nasdaq Composite index fell 123 points, or 1.4% to close near 8,393. The Commerce Department said that retail sales fell 8.7% in March, versus the 7.1% decline expected by economists in a MarketWatch poll, while the Federal Reserve said that industrial production also fell more than expected last month. Efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 did not begin in earnest in much of the country until late March, leading analysts to predict that the economic impact in April will be even more severe.
