For true rail fans, the ultimate luxury is traveling in a private rail car. It was the preferred method of travel across the United States during the late Gilded Age for the likes of the Vanderbilts and the Fricks. Some families owned their own rail cars, while others rented them as needed. Henry Ford crossed the country in the Fair Lane , an ornate private car where he hosted guests such as President Herbert Hoover.
