Banks, post offices, government offices and the stock market will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16. Grocery stores, restaurants and retail stores are more likely to be open. Presidents Day, officially "Washington's Birthday," was the first holiday to be named after an individual president. It was established in 1879 to honor George Washington but has since expanded to celebrate all U.S. presidents. The name Presidents Day became more widely recognized after a shift was created to observe a three-day weekend in 1968. Congress, however, never changed the name from "Washington's Birthday" to Presidents Day under federal law. Here's a look at what's open and closed on Presidents Day.
