USA Rare Earth, a Stillwater-based critical minerals company, announced this week it has secured access to the funding through the CHIPS and Science Act, a $280 billion law passed in 2022 to boost U.S. competitiveness, particularly against China, by strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing and research, AI and advancing supply chains. The deal with USA Rare Earth marks one of the largest investments in domestic production for the minerals, which are essential for modern technology, including smartphones, electric vehicles and defense systems. It's a commitment that includes $277 million in direct funding and $1.3 billion in loans. That will be combined with $1.5 billion in private investment through PIPE (private investment in public equity), bringing the total capital infusion to $3.1 billion.
